Berlin

Berlin is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut.  The population is over 19,000 according to the 2010 census.  Incorporated in 1785, the geographic center of Connecticut is located in the town. Berlin is residential and industrial, and is served by the Amtrak station of the same name.

The Metacomet Ridge, runs along the west side of Berlin.  Some mountains of the Metacomet ridge found in Berlin include the Hanging Hills, Lamentation Mountain, Short Mountain, and Ragged Mountain. There is a lot of hiking trails available on the Metacomet and Mattabessett Trails in Berlin.

Silver Lake has an area of 146 acres, a maximum depth of 16 feet and a mean depth of 5 feet.  Private homes and the Berlin Turnpike border the eastern side.  A railroad track runs through woods on the west side of the lake.  The lake has a state boat ramp but no public swimming access.  There is a paved access road to the boat launch and 15 parking spaces.  Toilets are available seasonally

All boating is permitted on the lake.  Kayaking, canoes and motorboats are a common sight and a great way to enjoy the views of Spring, Summer and Fall.  During the summer months waterskiing is permitted.  Fishing is very popular here with many species including large and smallmouth bass; catfish, sunfish, chain pickerel and yellow perch to name a few.  Ice fishing is also permitted here on the lake, and an ice fishing tournament is held during the winter.
